Everyone deserves a sanctuary where they can find tranquility at home, and for many, this place is the bathroom. It’s not just about functionality. It’s also about providing a soothing, aesthetically pleasing environment where homeowners can escape the stresses of everyday life. This is where Character Interiors, a local remodeling contractor based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, excels. Recently, they took on a main bathroom step-in shower and total bathroom remodel for a Hartford, Michigan homeowner, demonstrating their commitment to both excellent craftsmanship and client satisfaction.
The Promise of Professionalism and Detail
From the outset, Character Interiors committed to maintaining a clean and secure working environment throughout the project. This promise extended from floor and home protection to the containment of dust and debris during high-impact work. Every day, the team performed a broom and dustpan cleanup removing and disposing of daily debris. Upon project completion, they also carried out a professional site clean up in all work areas.
To facilitate a smooth progression of the project and to ensure none of their personal items were damaged or misplace, we asked the homeowner was asked to clear all belongings from the bathroom linen closet before the project started.
The Main Bathroom Remodel: Demolition & Preparation
The first phase of the project involved detailed demolition and preparation. This started with removing and disposing of the shower curtain rod. The crew carefully removed any necessary base trim and preserved it. They also cut and removed wallpaper where required. The team also dismantled and disposed of the existing tub, tub/shower wall panels, and tub/shower fixtures.

Throughout the process, the team paid keen attention to signs of the existing tub leaking. They were prepared to address any rotted framing, subfloor, or floor underlayment discovered behind shower panels or under the tub. While such repairs weren’t included in the initial proposal, Character Interiors committed to resolving any issues to ensure the successful completion of the project.
With demolition completed, the team moved onto the next phase of preparation. This included installing insulation to the exterior wall if necessary and setting up Delta rough-in tub/shower valves. The crew made plumbing connections at the floor and wall, with the understanding that any additional plumbing updates necessary to meet code after opening up the walls and ceilings would incur additional charges.
The New Shower Installation
The centerpiece of the remodel was the installation of a 60″ x 30″ Sterling Ensemble Shower Pan and 3-Piece Tub/Shower Wall Kit (S721801200). Our crew installed this high-quality unit to the stud wall following the manufacturer’s specifications. The project also included a 2-Piece Chrome Shower Drain PFP600. We ensured the floor underlayment was ready for tub/showers, with replacements or repairs available at additional costs if needed.
Installation of the new shower/tub system also necessitated changes to window trim, while the new shower unit was fitted with a Delta Chrome Waste, Drain Assembly PFP600. To complete the look and functionality, Delta Chrome shower trims were provided and installed, including a Showerhead, Single Handle DT14238LHD, and a Handheld Shower Wand.

Final Touches
The team installed new drywall on all walls affected by the remodel. The team hung, taped and floated the drywall to a smooth finish ready for paint. They installed two shower grab bars – one on the back wall horizontally and one on the right side wall vertically, providing added safety and support for the homeowner. They also added a new chrome shower curtain rod and shower curtain as well.
To finalize the remodel, the team installed new pine colonial base trim. It’s important to note that the main proposal didn’t include the removal or replacement of existing flooring, as well as priming, painting, or staining.
